Rice – The Perfect Survival Food

Rice – The Perfect Survival Food

I’ve spent lots of time reading about long term food storage methods such as freezing, dehydration, pre-packaged MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). Some people have different goals than I do when prepping food. While it would be great to have a variety of food, you can really rack up a huge bill in buying the trendy survival food products you see on the net. Yes, it’s true they will last for years without spoiling but you can get the same shelf life out of ordinary white rice without breaking the piggy bank. My goal isn’t to eat like a king if the need arises to survive without the luxury of running to the supermarket.

After doing lots of research I’ve found that long grain white rice is the primary staple in most of the world’s societies and they manage just fine. Just to break things down to where we can all understand it, rice offers nearly 1400 calories per cup which is over 3000 calories per pound. You can fit about 30 pounds in a 5 gallon bucket which is nearly 100,000 calories. This would give you nearly 50 days of survival food!

Here’s a bucket with 112 servings with a shelf-life of 20 years! Can’t beat that: Instant White Rice

Long grain white rice is low in saturated fat (0.4 grams) with no cholesterol. It’s also low in sodium and very low in sugar, but high in manganese. This particular rice offers 45 grams of carbs and 4 grams of protein. While it doesn’t offer a huge nutritional value, it will keep you from being malnourished and it’s a great source of energy.
